You’re definitely going to have a great day of whitewater rafting. But a bit of advance preparation can take your whitewater rafting experience to the next level. Here are a few things you can do before you head out to make the most of your day of rafting.
Do Some Research
Picking the right tour is the first step in planning your outdoor adventure. We offer both a half-day trip which covers 5 miles and is between 2.5 to 3 hours, and features Class III to IV rapids, and a full-day trip which covers 10 miles over 5.5 hours and features rapids up to Class V. While the trips are very different they make for equally great adventures. We also have group options for your next family reunion or team-building outing. Read through the details in order to select the best trip for you and your pals.
What to Wear
First things first, check the weather! And remember, no matter what, you are definitely going to get wet. In the warmer months, you will generally be fine with just a bathing suit, waterproof sunscreen (remember—lots of water), and a pair of sports sandals or old sneakers. When it’s a bit cooler outside, consider bringing a pair of fleece pants or a fleece jacket. Synthetic materials and wool maintain their ability to keep you warm when wet, but cotton doesn’t. And of course, don’t forget your towel! If you’d like, bring along your shower supplies for a nice hot shower in our bathhouse after your trip. Lastly, a change of clothes for your ride home. When it comes to specific safety gear and rafting equipment, no need to worry, we’ve got you covered. If you use prescription glasses be sure to secure them with a leash, and if you can, keep a spare pair in your car or our outpost location.
Fuel Your Body
We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But this is even more relevant on a day of physical activity. Choose the right fuel to help you make it through the day. Think of yourself as an athlete (even if you’re a beginner), a well-balanced meal will give you that extra boost to make it through the day without a rumbly tummy and add a bit extra pep in your step. Don’t be afraid of carbs, they’re a crucial part of your body’s energy consumption. Consider options like whole-wheat bread or oatmeal. Be sure to get some protein too like eggs, full-fat greek yogurt, or nuts, and add some fiber with fruits or vegetables. Other great choices include a breakfast burrito, or switch things up with leftover dinner for breakfast. And lastly, be sure to hydrate. Although you’re going to encounter a lot of water during your rafting trip, be sure to put some water inside your body too.
Prepare your stuff the night before
Give yourself a break. Aim to have a stress-free morning the day of your rafting adventure. Take time to prepare your outfit, meals, and anything else you will need for the following day in advance. Think like Santa, make yourself a (check)list and be sure to check it twice!
Get Some Rest and Relaxation
Get to bed early. A good night’s sleep will have you well-rested and energized for your day of rafting. There are a ton of benefits to your health when it comes to regularly getting a good night’s sleep. But sleep is also an essential part of physical activity, not just in terms of how your body will feel physically, but it also affects things like concentration and reaction times. So once all your planning is done, kick back, take it easy, and catch some much-needed Zzs. You’re going to have a great time rafting—especially now that everything is prepped and you’re all ready to go!
